Surfing the Retirement Tsunami

Your Guide to Staying Afloat and Retiring Comfortably

As we grow older and our financial goals change from growth and accumulation of our assets to that of preservation and distribution, our concerns change with them. At this point, we move into the first two mature phases of life. The first phase encompass typically those from approximately 55-65, and then the second phase is made of those who are generally retired from about 65 on up. Although this book provides guidance and insight for all investors, its recommendations are primarily for these two groups.

Something clicks inside us as we turn 50. At this point in our lives our fears generally become our health and running out of money in retirement. Once we have a few years of retirement under our belt, we enter the second phase, enjoying our golden years. Although we still worry about health and running out of money, we have pretty much dealt with these issues by now and have become comfortable with them. What keeps the second phase of retirees up at night is financial security for the surviving spouse and the legacy they would like to leave.

The good news is that your visions of retiring as you dreamed, hoped and deserve are still attainable through proper planning. With the stress of the money issues abated, it becomes much easier to continue to live the dream. The bad news is that you are going to have to learn how to surf this gigantic retirement tsunami in order to get there.

Learning to surf at any age is tough, but doing so at age 50, 60 or 70 is a whole different ball game. You know what you need to do in order to create that life of luxury in your golden years, but are you prepared to do what it takes to get there? Never forget that true financial planning, and especially planning for retirement, is about a whole lot more than just what investments to buy.

Planning for retirement is hard enough without the added peril of a dangerous economy, but that’s where we are now. Retirees and those close are facing a veritable tsunami, and you either learn how to hold your breath for the next 5-8 years or you learn how to surf this retirement tsunami. So grab your surfboards and let’s go for a ride!
